Press Release

GreenBeans is a name you can trust.

Fort Walton Beach, FL – January 21, 2015

It has come to light that some of our product is not being purchased through farmers that partake in the fair trade agreement as advertised, but instead coming from farms that were misrepresenting themselves as ethical farmers. We would like to reassure you that this is a terrible mistake and we are taking every action possible to correct this mishap.

It is our goal to purchase from suppliers that uphold the highest-quality, ethically sourced products as possible. One aspect that makes GreenBeans different than other coffee retailers are that we support local farmers, constantly strive to improve ethical standards, and practice ethical purchasing practices.

In recent months it has come to our attention that several employees are responsible for purchasing the unethical coffee supplies that were used from July 2014 to December 2014, and this matter is being dealt with as sensitively and as effectively as possible. We would like to express to our customers and stockholders that this type of incident is isolated, and that this will not happen again. We sincerely apologize to everyone that has been affected by this incident.

Several things that we are doing to repair brand image are to educate employees on the importance of ethical supplies, as well as train them how to spot suppliers that are not partaking in the fair trade agreement. From this point forward, all new suppliers will have background checks prior to purchase to ensure no more mistakes happen. We are also going audit supplies that come in on a quarterly basis.

Part of what makes GreenBeans successful in our approach to practice ethically is that we are part of the Coffee and Farmer Equity (C.A.F.E.), where our coffee buying program insures that we are buying coffee from ethical partners. We have offered Fair trade coffee since opening our doors in 2005, and we are now the largest purchaser of Fair trade certified coffee in North America. It is our goal to only offer certified Fair trade organic products in all of our stores by the end of 2015.
